Which universities should I apply to? (St. Petersburg)

Gentlemen, habrausers, tell me, which universities in St. Petersburg should I apply to? Interested in the Department of Information Technology or Applied Informatics. So far, I am considering ITMO, Polytechnic and Herzen as options. What other options are there? Who received higher education?

@sagod

Why are you not considering St Petersburg University?

Better ITMO. Communicated with graduates of this university. Very harsh people in terms of IT.

It is quite possible to pass to mathmech with such points. For the same applied mathematics and computer science, since you are interested in this direction.

And why is the SUAI not being considered?)
So it seems that not everything is so bad in terms of IT specialties - there is a rich choice.
Although I myself will go to LETI, it is conveniently located, and the children are mostly smart) At least from my acquaintances - solid intelligentsia.
For me, it practically doesn’t matter which university, teachers and classmates are important, but here it’s how lucky. The rest is on your own.

Something you somehow unjustifiably missed LETI. I graduated from it, and there is a department of laser measuring navigation systems LINS - a very strong department. Friends graduated from FKTI - the faculty of computer technology and informatics. No one seemed to complain, but ITMO wins indisputably in terms of programming. Anyway, you will figure it out yourself in many ways, and the institute will give only the basis)

At St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University at the FTK IUS they teach normally. For 4 years I had to write in Pascal, VBA, C (including under MK), C ++, asm, C #, Java, VHDL, Verilog, FORTRAN, bash, sh, T-SQL - all this is included in the program.
They gave lectures about some languages, for some they simply gave assignments and a link to Google. A couple of courses are lectures on programming technology, industrial programming. They talk about agile methodologies, incl. There is a course book on Scrum. One Linux course, one OpenGL/DX course, was a design and test course that ran on the IBM Telelogic TAU environment.
In general, a complete set, and at a very modern level. The teachers are good, there are young ones, everyone is “in the know”. Of course, self-education plays an important role. But this is good and right, because, firstly, it will come in handy in life, and secondly, technologies are rushing forward and it is useless to cram something. The task is to quickly find, understand and give a good result to the mountain. This does not apply to matan, mathematical logic, mathematical models, mathematical statistics, theoretical faith, theoretical optimization and other tin, but without them in any way :)
What else… every year Microsoft conferences, where students from all over St. Petersburg present their work, perform, take seats. All papers are printed in a special booklet, and the winners, in addition to diplomas, on condition that their work is finalized, get the opportunity to be published in the Polytechnic journal, next to the scientific papers of teachers. Then you can go and brag.
The Department of IMS cooperates with Motorola Solutions, after the second / third year you can take a summer practice there. Some are left to work with a 20-hour work week. It's great to work there, the level is high, both in programming and in the general process (CMMI of the 5th level of maturity, all things). Well, the opportunity to go full-time after graduation. With EMC (not the one that mail, but the one that stores and processes information), too, but I didn’t work there, I don’t know. Again, there is practice, students do not complain, they stay there.
Since we are talking about work, we must also talk about time. If you do not go to the military department (and, as far as I know, it has become very difficult to get there, but it is better to clarify), then there is a whole free day a week. One more, as a rule, can be mowed down painlessly. In extreme cases, leave the last lectures, then you can work 20 hours a week without problems. The teachers, as I already said, are normal - they will understand if you still try and don’t score at all.
In general, I like to study here, I will go to the master's program here in a month. I have nothing to compare with, but judging by the reviews, it’s easier here than in the same St. Petersburg State University. The main thing is that you need internal motivation and work outside the university (read books, write something for yourself, practice at work - self-development, in general). I think that then you can get out of Herzen (I didn’t know that programmers are taught there) as an excellent programmer :)

Hmm... people.
ITMO does not win in terms of programming.
There is only CT (as I wrote above) which is taught to the fullest, and, accordingly, they have a shaft of knowledge.
And so ... in the specialty of Information Systems of the Faculty of Information Technology and Programming, you won’t learn a damn thing.
More or less able to code those who left to work in the 2nd or 3rd year. And the rest can write hello world in php, javascript, c++, paskal, c#. Nothing from the theory is given.
There was a good T-SQL course. But the theory was taught so quickly that _nobody_ had time to write it down.
The first term paper in php, the second in matkad.
In general, I think that it is better at LETI.
At least I would go there now.

Actually, according to all of the above, we can already conclude that it is not the main thing where - the main thing is how. Until you yourself understand that you want to study and be a professional, which university will not help.
I myself am graduating from the I3 department at the BSTU "Voenmekh". And judging by my classmates, I can say that those who study the first two courses, and the rest work and show initiative in their studies (finish assignments to perfection, take extracurricular funds, etc.) are really smart people. And this state of affairs is easily explained - in our time of rapid development of IT, only self-education will make a true professional, because. the main teaching staff are people over 50, and they are rarely interested in what's new there. They can only give a base.
By the way, since we are talking about goodies, then at BSTU, if you get to the first hostel, the road to the university will take 15-20 minutes on foot. And there is also a military department, which is important for the male half of the population.

Polytechnic is not bad - I graduated from it, but a long time ago. ITMO is now one of the most promising, because there is a punchy boss who raises money and promotes the university at the government level.
I think that the university is needed in order to gain useful contacts and gain experience - ITMO in this (IMHO) is now slightly ahead of the Polytechnic University. It is better to study programming at ITMO, hardware, information security and system administration - I think, at the Polytechnic University.

St. Petersburg State University / ITMO / LETI / Polytechnic University
And then compscicenter.ru/. And, probably, then it is better to choose a university with a hostel in the city, i.e. not St. Petersburg State University.

Only the Parfyonov department is strong at ITMO - it's true! In general, every year ITMO really only fails in terms of the level of study - and there is more and more PR, and the ITMO leadership has long been not interested in studying - if only to ensure the indicators by all truths and not truths !!! The salary of a teacher for 1 position at ITMO is 23-25 thousand per month, and basically all teachers switch to 0.5 and 0.25 positions - you can divide it yourself in monetary terms. Because on that full time - you really will lie down! Bet - life! ;) Think for yourself - who conducts classes for this money!!! Older teachers have retired or gone to another world! And if people on grants or on money 5 in 100 sat down, then they don’t need this teaching. Will a talented scientist or IT specialist teach you for 10 thousand per month???!!! Any well-known surname that is being promoted at ITMO can be typed in on the ITMO website in the Education section. Timetable of classes. According to the teacher - and you will see that they have no teaching load at all or its minimum. Let's even say associate professor of the department. KT Andrey Stankevich is one of the ITMO team leaders (winners of ACM ICPC) - he has one full day in his 2016 schedule Wednesday from 11 am to 5 pm and Thursday from 1240 pm to 3 40 pm! ALL!!! With a standard workload of 36 hours a week for 1 bet, it turns out that he leads 6 + 3 = 9 hours a week! Those. for lecture hours - 0.25 rate! (even if at the same time it is designed at least 0.5 or full)! Well, how many people will he spud during this time - well, one stream (3-4 groups) at best !!! and even then only that stream will hear lectures ?! Many well-known names at ITMO - who make their way on the Internet, and their teaching load is minimal - because, in fact, the forces to invest in students for a penny. Shalyto A.A. - Schedule not found (does not lead classes), Bukhanovsky A.V. - 1 hour per week! Belov P.A. - 3 hours a week! So it turns out - that you will come to study, and who will teach you - God knows, just who ?! Therefore, there are less and less trends and disciplines in ITMO, and more and more verbiage!

And who thinks about the same Polytechnic University about this department? It seems that the curriculum is not bad, and practice is possible at RSC Energia - there should be an interesting place.
