What can you say about this? Is it worth it to take a new thinkpad today or take the T440p for the sake of a childhood dream.

Thinkpad is definitely worth taking the one that has a TrackPoint. At the very now such (E480). After getting used to the trackpoint, the soul does not lie with other laptops, and the touchpad is perceived as some kind of ergonomic misunderstanding.
