For me personally, first of all, compactness, a good optical stabilizer (an indispensable thing for shooting video) and a superzoom of at least x12 are important. Megapixels - in the third place, they are sufficient in modern devices, and often redundant. I started with the Canon PowerShot SX120, then SX130, and now I use the SX240, which is more compact than the previous ones, and it has a 20x zoom (and this has helped out more than once in the field). The distortion inherent in a lens with such a zoom is not significant for me.
