I really liked Deitel's last book... Topics covered well. Lots of examples.. and challenges after the chapters as the difficulty increases! recommend!

1. Laforet's book was not liked at the time, it seemed "windows-oriented". Firstly, the development software, which is recommended there, exists only under windows, and also, at the initial stages of study, libraries are required that are only available under Windows. (There are a lot of typos in the Russian translation, sometimes very significant)
2. I really liked it, everything is explained in more detail, why Laforet. It was also a plus for me that the author did not stay in the Stone Age and does not forget about c ++ 11. (I read it in English, so I won’t say anything about the translation)
3. I haven’t read it, but they say that this is also an excellent book.

Since the question is asked, then no. You don't have to read books at all. It obviously breaks you from reading :)
