Which nettop to choose for a media center?
The covered router, as well as the ever-buggy iconbit set-top box, made me think about buying an adequate device.
Wishlist:
- receive / distribute the Internet (wifi and on the switch)
- play video on TV via HDMI
- for the future, to pull 4k (optional)
- download torrents
- backups and other file storage
- ideally I would like to put Android there too (maybe just run under a virtual machine?) (optional)
- the base OS is not important, I am friends with both Linux and Venda.
I saw different reviews / articles on habr such as habrahabr.ru/post/171689 but the hardware is now being updated quickly, maybe there are some "better" (well, or cheaper) solutions.
I would like to consider various options for devices - from ready-made to "order on eBay and assemble it yourself."
Depending on the characteristics, I consider budgets of ~ 6-10k rubles, and ~ 15+k rubles (does it make sense?).
Tell us about your similar pieces of iron, what components, etc. where did you get it (ebay?)

It all depends on the size of the "file dump". For some time I had a nettop for the same tasks, but in the vast majority of cases, more than one HDD cannot be inserted into it, but for backup I want RAID. Switched to a full NAS.
As for the choice of a nettop, there will not be much difference between them in this price range. Take whichever you like.
I would recommend to build something based on mATX, or use a NAS in the end.
I myself assembled such a system based on the Intel H87 in a quiet way. The Fractal Design Node looks pretty good in a case. According to the characteristics, it costs RAM 16 GB 1866mhz, 1 SSD per system (it costs Fedora), 3x2Tb WD RED screws, i5 4670, Asus PCE-AC66 as wifi, it remains to decide on the PSU. It turned out to be more expensive than 15k rubles, but I started collecting it 3-4 months ago, so there was no one-time blow to the budget. But this system still goes under the assembly of projects and is located for the database. Therefore, he collected more help.
And is it even possible?
It is hardly realistic to get into a master's program for a programmer after economics. Even harder to learn. I'm a bachelor's student in "software engineering" and we have a bunch of specialized subjects. It will be hard. If you really need to, then you can try to memorize something for the exam, but if you have to write a program on the exam ... The chances of admission will sharply begin to tend to zero. But you need to learn at least the basics: repeat the whole matan (they like to give tasks for calculating), look at the main data structures (not to be confused with the stack :D), sorting algorithms, graph traversals. Well, some applied language to learn: C ++, C #, Java. If you have knowledge of OOP, then it will be very good.
The emphasis in preparation should be on mathematics: matan, linear algebra, and so on. Repeat algorithmization, data structures, OOP. Specific languages in this case will play a smaller role.
Without any specific training, especially in mathematical disciplines, it seems to me that it will be very difficult for you to enter. Although of course nothing is impossible. But most importantly why? If you need the education of a programmer, then it is better to get a second higher education in abbreviated ways through a correspondence course.
