Start right away with practice, make a small application, I myself started this way, android books quickly become outdated, the latest information is always in the documentation.
Mayer will be difficult to begin with.
If you are a beginner, it is better to start with the first option, then proceed to the second.

If for a beginner, then I think Hardy and Phillips are not a very good choice. I myself read it after Mayer, it seems to me more difficult, and there are errors in the code that, in order to fix, you need to already have some knowledge. As for practice, I support Lucian, it's better to come up with some idea for an application and, implementing it step by step, look into the documentation, books, Google. Of the books, a new edition of the Deitels has also appeared.
Try video tutorials, startandroid for example, or here , the first lecture appeared this week.
