Whether facet search correctly I understand?

As far as I understand, it differs from the usual advanced search in that the properties (which are searched for) have predefined ranges / sets of values. If you put a couple of ordinary inputs in the faceted search block (for entering free text) Will this search no longer be faceted?

Facet search is a search by a set of values of object characteristics. Here's an article on how to implement it on MySQL and Sphinx.
