Where to store the filter object?

I have a method that has one of the filter parameters, a string type.

Further this parameter is substituted in no request.
There is also a class filter, which at the output gives the resulting string filter to be substituted into the method.

The question is, if the method is used in several places, with a different number of parameters, sometimes the filter is passed, sometimes not.

Does it make sense to remove the filter parameter and get it right inside the method before calling there is no request?

I'm not sure that I conveyed my idea correctly, if paraphrasing.

Maybe someone has a code example, take a look, it would be easier
