Where to find Russian-speaking programmers who are motivated to practice spoken English?
Do you know a resource (forums, chats) where you can find Russian-speaking programmers who are motivated to practice spoken English?
I am constantly practicing my spoken English, and would like to find programming buddies with whom I could discuss programming issues in English. I try every day for an hour to have such a conversation on Skype or any other voice chat.
For many, my request sounds strange, why do I need Russian-speaking programmers. They say the language should be taught only with native speakers. Let me explain my logic:
- I do not consider such communication as a serious work with the language. This is just practice. For serious work, I have a tutor.
- There is a cultural difference. I have a lot of experience in communicating with both Russian-speaking programmers and foreigners. I can’t help myself, it’s more interesting for me to communicate with people of my mentality.
- I would have no problem communicating with English-speaking programmers (and I communicate with several), but I never managed to find truly experienced ones among them. I have over 15 years of experience and I want to communicate with advanced programmers. And I have a suspicion that there are experienced Russian-speaking programmers who are motivated to practice English. Those. I am much more interested in communicating with an advanced programmer with mediocre English than with an Englishman who is new to programming.
- For me, programming is not only a way to earn money, but it is also my favorite pastime in life. I always work remotely on small private projects, so I don't have the opportunity to discuss programming topics with colleagues. In this communication, the skill of the interlocutor in programming is more important to me than his English. If you only need English, then you can hire at least 2 tutors per day. Tutor prices are much lower than the income of an experienced programmer.
I tried to find programmers to chat on upwork slack. But nothing happened.
My guess is that the most motivated to practice spoken English are those programmers who have recently moved to another country or are just about to start. Do you know any resources in the spirit of "Russian programmers abroad"?
Do you have any other ideas where you can find such programmers motivated to learn English?
PS If someone wants to practice their conversational skills with native speakers and their experience in programming is not important to you, then this is very easy to do. On reddit, in the thematic channels of your activity, offer yourself as a mentor, offer to make a code review specifically for the English (the time zone is closest to us). There will be many applicants.
PSS If anyone reading this question would like to discuss common topics with me in English, I would be glad. A few words about myself as a programmer
- Currently I try to use only JavaScript (TypeScript), as I work full-stack. There used to be a lot of java and python
- Still more bias on the backend (Node.js + TypeScript)
- A lot of devops in the work: docker, ansible
- Now I work only with blockchain topics, mainly on ethereum
