Where to dig in case of poor site indexing?

I understand that the question is closer to offtopic, but: there is a site (media content, pictures) is very poorly indexed by bots, the content is not unique (it is difficult to achieve uniqueness with images), can someone tell me how to conduct a good analysis of the site? Maybe the problem is something I'll never guess :)

You can register on some automatic promotion system, such as megaindex.ru or seopult. You can see them, tips on optimizing headings / texts, etc., specifically for your site.
On megaindex, for example, you can conduct a free site audit - audit.megaindex.ru .

You answered your own question, the content is not unique, that's why bots don't index it.

1 - make sure that the linking is good (make the search engine linger longer)
2 - register in Google and Yandex Analytics - it will show where they click more often where the fails
3 - use schema.org
4 - register in Google and Yandex Webmasters - manually set indexing
5 - use site map
… You can write a lot

And non-unique content is always poorly indexed, the old days are gone forever. In addition, when there is nothing on the page (a page like: “Another page of the site”), this also doesn’t really get into the index, because it’s not clear to whom and for what requests it may be needed.
Pictures are great for non-uniqueness (even if you reduce / increase them). Although there are ways to uniqueize, I won’t teach bad things, and if you want, you can guess for yourself.

1. Sitemap.xml, RSS, announcements in social networks
2. Add to Yandex/Google.webmaster and see what search engines complain about
3. Correct titles, description, h1..h3 tags
4. Remove unnecessary external links and reduce the number internal
5. Dilute content with unique materials
6. Recently, page loading speed has become very important
7. Valid HTML/CSS
