Where does hard drive space go?

There is a 500GB hard drive, divided into "C" 100GB for the system and "D" 400GB for media.
On the system drive "C" the free space is slowly disappearing.
As a result, out of 100GB, 21GB is occupied on it and 1GB is free, where another 78GB has gone is not clear!
Windows XP, recycle bin almost empty, NTFS disk, CHKDISC didn't help.
Disk "D" is fine.

I recommend this program: www.jam-software.com/treesize_free
WinDirStat is slightly outdated and it can't get the size of the System Volume Information folder.
