I was also surprised about the loss. Maybe they thought it was the provider's advertisement. I repeat on the subject - there are a lot of defective ones, try switching the "static / dynamic IP address" modes, if after a couple of manipulations it works - it is likely that the device is defective. I advise you to replace it with the same DIR-300, if you need more powerful - the 655th is also a good beast.

In your case, you don't need to configure anything. Forget this word about the MAC address and never remember it when setting up the router at home.
1) Find instructions on the Internet for resetting your router, apply it
2) Connect the router to the provider's cable in the connector marked WAN. _NO NEED TO CONFIGURE ANYTHING_
