Where can I read documentation / tutorials on modifying kernels for Android?

I wanted to learn how to modify kernels and firmware for Android, but I don’t even know where to start (apart from learning C and assembler). There must be documentation or at least some information that will help me with this?

IMHO. Start with commonplace Linux'a (Unix'a) to understand the architecture. Then C and Java.
