If you work on ru. venues, the most rewarding way is to take projects that you find interesting and do them. Customers in projects post materials (TOR, sometimes source codes, links to their sites) and write a fairly detailed description. This is the easiest way not to come up with a project, as I tried to do (a teapot shop that sells cups and teapots), but to start real projects from the start.
And another working option is contests. Just a freebie here: the customer exposes all the information on the project, you can openly ask clarifying questions, do the work and immediately receive feedback from the customer and other freelancers.
