Where and how to look for open source codes?

I heard more than once that you can significantly improve your programming skills by reading someone else's code - I registered on
Github, did everything as it was indicated in the tutorial and, it seems, I understood how to manage my own files. But I ca
n't find any source code for projects! :( I search for: "JavaScript" and it gives me results, I go to any repository, and there is not a single file with the extension .js. There are other files with extensions that I have not even heard of ... All the tutorials on YouTube teach how create new branches and make Pull Requests, but I don’t need it ... Tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I don't understand?
