When should you use ngAnimate?

I'm reading and I can't figure out when to use the ngAnimate module. It is not clear for a simple animation, or vice versa for a very advanced one that is more complicated than usual?
It's easier for me to do everything myself, but if ngAnimate is really for something serious,
then I'd rather devote time to it than bypass it. How to be?
