When installing Gentoo, I can't switch between virtual terminals. What's the catch?

The Gentoo handbook says that when installing gents with minimal sid, you can switch between terminals using Alt+F1 F2, etc... But for some reason this feature does not work out of the box during installation. Even though I didn't get to do anything. Just booted from the minimum sit. Can anyone suggest how to fix this?

The solution turned out to be simple! I just activated Fn mode on the Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard. Here's the thing. Disabled Fn mode and everything worked normally.
