In my projects for users, I do the same as you need, everything is minimal.
Therefore, I do not use any extensions, they are useless - "0"
All you need is to spend a couple of hours on a simple copy- paste and setup . No extra tables in the database, everything is at a minimum. Check out the related articles, there's a lot of interesting stuff too.
After reading, I think you will no longer have a question about installing a third-party extension and digging into its code.
ps You can arrange everything as a module, and transfer it between your projects.
