In my opinion, a very abstract question and without problematics of the task - to put it mildly, it is not easy to solve it.
It is trite to decide whether to use a database server or a document-oriented storage without understanding your business.

Offhand, read about the architecture of StackOverflow.com, this is a prime example of a highly loaded system built using the .NET stack
