What version of Ubuntu is better to put on an old computer with a Pentium 4 and 2Gb of RAM?

There is a computer with the above described configuration. They asked him to put Ubuntu next to WinXP. I don’t really want to select the version by typing in the plan, it will pull, it won’t pull. I'm not very familiar with Linux, I used it sometimes. Recorded on DVD 14.04 Alena, launched as LiveDVD. It loaded for a few minutes, but then started. In this regard, the question is: which version is better to put on such a computer? And how not to ruin Windows at the same time? Wubi in version 14.04 did not offer to install directly from under Windows, but suggested rebooting into demo mode and installing from there.
Thanks in advance.

What is "Alena" o_O?
You did the right thing, because it will be very slow.
As an option, you can install 12.04 (it is officially supported for several more years), in theory it will eat less in terms of graphics, because your machine is old and there will be enough drivers. But in general, I would recommend 15.04, its graphics itself is faster out of the box, install zram, and cut down unnecessary stuff from autoload. The machine is old, and modern software requires more and more resources, you won’t get much from it anyway, and with the old version of Ubuntu, it may be difficult to install the latest versions of some applications.
You recorded it on a disk, it doesn’t load very quickly from a USB 3.0 flash drive, and even more so here. Once installed it will be faster.
If you don’t do anything like that, GRUB will be installed, it will have a choice of OS, including XP
