What tools are needed for layout on retina?
I'm starting to learn to type. As far as I understand for the poppy, the most optimal program is sublime text. But I heard or read somewhere that some kind of crutches, virtual machines, or something like that is called like that, are needed for the retina. Please explain what it is and what it is eaten with.

You have the wrong understanding of everything.
Virtual machines in layout are usually used for testing in IE.
Retina - this is just a type of display and its peculiarity is that the pictures on the site must be in 2 sizes - standard and x2. There are articles on this topic on Habré, so I see no reason to paint all this here.
Sublime is a good choice.
For a poppy, the most optimal tool is the one in which you will be comfortable, and even if it will be vim, sublime, webstorm, xcode, etc., this is purely your personal choice. Next, you choose what you will use to help you (assemblers, preprocessors, graphics optimizers, etc.). When you make layout, you will get acquainted with the nuances of layout, which is the retina.

Virtual machines are not needed.
to check on a regular retina display at least somehow, you can run firefox with these parameters ..
enter about:config in the address line - then find - layout.css.devPixelsPerPx,
and change the value from -1.0 to 2
