What to look for when choosing a web studio or freelancer besides their/his portfolio?
I want to hire people to build a website. Back-end and server-side JS are not of interest. Everything is clear with the portfolio, but what else should I pay attention to so that later I don’t beat my forehead against the wall.

Thanks in advance!

Checks:
1. At the time of voicing the cost of the work, ask to explain the cost of calculating the layout, detailing the process itself.
Can - it means he does it himself, no - it means he resells.
2. If he answers that "I have the cost of an hour [such and such], but how long it will take is not yet clear." Refuse immediately!
3. Layout - always post-payment or contract (check only with a lawyer)!
4. Check the HTML code for validity as soon as the empty frame ("white sheet") is ready.
5. Check the MUST! the presence of semantic HTML5 markup (header, nav, article, section, aside, footer, address, main, figure, etc.).
6. Check for micro markup: google , yandex .
7. All block animations - in a separate UNCOMPRESSED! js file!
8. All forms/calculators/search strings - ONLY in HTML: there should be no AJAX-s and validations until the layout is installed on the backend!

Freelancer is easy.
If the portfolio and the stack of technologies used suit you, we give 1 page for layout. Then everything else.
This way you can minimize the risks.
For the way they speak/write.
The right studio/freelancer should be asking the right questions. And more. Completely understanding the issue.
If the conversation is only for the amount, and not for the details of the project, then think about what task will be solved for your money:
yours, which you did not explain to them?
Or some of their own that they themselves came up with in their head?
Now on the stock exchange almost for free typesetting. I usually give 3-4 freelancers, and then I choose the layout I like the most, but at the same time I pay for the work of all performers.
Well, hiring a studio purely for layout is strong, it seems to me that not a single normal studio will undertake this, or the price tag will be a cloud. And I don't know any studios that make layouts purely. The main thing here is not to pay in advance and maintain constant control, that is, watch the results of layout all the time, so that there is no such thing as typesetting for twenty days and then only showing
When choosing a performer, it will not be superfluous to pay attention to broad promises. As a rule, the more rosy-cheeked optimism, the less chance of success.
