What to choose for a chipset: thermal paste or thermal pad?

Good afternoon!

I got a MacBook in 2012 at a low price. I changed the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, then unscrewed the chipset heatsink, and there was dried thermal paste. On motherboards, they usually use a thermal pad on the chipset, but now I’m thinking: is it better to put a thermal pad or thermal paste? And why did you use thermal paste? Please share your tips. In my case, which would be better? Thanks)))

Thermal paste, if only because the engineers who put it there probably know more than you about their system, and also have more experience than you in heatsink design.
And there is probably not KPT-8, but something better.
My reasoning is that if you don't know how to improve the system, just repeat what the knowledgeable people have done before you.
