I will say from my personal experience: I have not yet seen recommendations to use tabs instead of spaces.
And personally, I advise using spaces.

2 spaces, then the code will be comfortably edited both in notepad or any file manager in the "admin panel", and in any editor and IDE, and somewhere the tabs turn out to be too long, and the "admin panel" (<textarea>) can enter a tab generally impossible.
