What server load spikes are considered normal?

I keep a small blog (wordpress) on one hosting where you need to pay for the consumption of resources (disk, database, memory, cpu, etc.). How many "burned" - so much and paid, very convenient for small sites.

But the other day I noticed something strange. In one day, the load on the CPU increased 70 times (!) Relative to the norm. Although it has never risen more than 2 times. As a result, I was charged a monthly amount for the day.
At the same time, all other load indicators remained the same, some were even reduced.
There has been no work on the site for a long time, updates were not downloaded, there were no new posts / comments either.

I wrote to technical support, but they say that these were bots, and not their problem at all. At the same time, this cannot be verified, because they only store logs for 10 days, and I noticed a jump after two weeks (when I saw that the money had suddenly run out).

Because I’m not an expert, then I doubted, maybe I’m wrong and such jumps are the norm?
The experience of desktop development has taught me that such a scenario is more likely to indicate some kind of freeze or error, but maybe there is a different logic in the web?

I would be grateful for any answers, otherwise I already have the feeling that I made claims without justification ...

Minimum: "Number of requests" - a parameter is required.
Well, the logs must be saved / viewed.
Otherwise, it could be a server backup, a disk write/read problem, an antivirus check, etc.
In general, while - it is not clear anything.
PS: I advise you to run away from such a host!

Normal load is a level load. This is if you observe a slow increase in users during a week, a month, the load on php, the database, the web server increases. If a sharp peak is most likely the hoster is right, these are bots, an attempt to guess the password to the admin panel or the authorization form. An error can also be, but the specifics in the web are different. If the errors are frequent, you will see them as a general site instability. If a rare, not scary, php worker falls and rises to zero again, performance will be restored. If the peak is at night and periodic, it is possible that these are backups, especially incorrectly configured mysql backups can lock your myisam databases and everything gets up at the time of the backup. To avoid such surprises, you need to set up monitoring, at least based on Monit.
