What's wrong with this putty?

Why, when you connect to the Ubuntu server via Putty, the up and down arrows do not work (instead of the command history, sequences of characters come out). Although, if at the same time go under the root, then everything works as it should.

Look at the encoding in the Putty settings. Also, as an option - this can happen if you have the /bin/sh shell on Ubuntu, and not /bin/bash. You can check it like this: echo $SHELL
