What's the point of using node.js and stuff for the backend?

What is the point of using node.js and other things for the freelance backend, if all customers basically ask for a stretch on the CMS, where understanding of php is needed. And another question, if I'm a frontend developer, then again, for freelance, at what level do I need to know the backend?

The Node backend for CMS is written by those who are too lazy (or lack the ability) to master another language other than JS.
And yes, all normal people write in PHP, you said everything correctly.
