What's the difference from whom to buy a domain?

I often see the question - where is it better to buy a domain, moreover, on specialized IT forums. I myself have never experienced problems with this, I bought it where I have to, most often directly from the hoster. What are the possible pitfalls?

They can sell a domain very cheaply. But its extension will cost quite different money.
The quantity and quality of additional services vary. For example, somewhere there is round-the-clock support, where not.
Somewhere there is a service of hiding contact data, somewhere not. Etc.
In general, American and large ones are better, like godaddy.com
