What processor will be the most productive on socket AM2?

There is an old ASUS M2N board with AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ and a desire to replace it with something more productive. Unfortunately, I don’t really understand the AMD model line, so I decided to ask for advice. List of supported models for this board from the ASUS website. Which one to choose? I also heard that you can put anything from AM2 + on socket AM2. How true is this? Thanks in advance.

In addition, consultations with motherboard manufacturers allowed our colleagues to clarify the issue of compatibility between Socket AM2 and Socket AM2+, although the problem has been discussed more than once before. So, Socket AM2+ processors can be installed in Socket AM2 motherboards. We will only have to sacrifice support for HyperTransport 3.0, since the bus will operate in HyperTransport 1.0 compatibility mode.
Forward compatibility will also be provided - Socket AM2 processors can be installed in motherboards with Socket AM2+. Thus, having bought a motherboard with Socket AM2+, a supporter of a gradual upgrade will be able to keep his old Socket AM2 processor for some time, and at the same time immediately join the functionality of the new chipset.

Furthermore:
Socket AM3 processors, thanks to their memory controller that works with both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, will be the most versatile and can be installed in Socket AM3, Socket AM2+ and Socket AM2 motherboards (providing a very decent service life for the latter platform). But they will not be backward compatible - neither Socket AM2 nor Socket AM2+ processors can be installed in Socket AM3 boards.

For my old desktop on Asus M2N-E, I changed the BIOS chip and flashed it to the latest version in order to install Phenom X4 9950 (HD995ZXAJ4BGH), 2.6GHz, 125W, rev.B3,SocketAM2+,Quad-Core)
According to the documentation for the motherboard, it supported.
Read the documentation on the manufacturer's website, everything is indicated there.
