What operating system to put on a weak PC in 2008?
What operating system can be installed for more or less comfortable work on an old computer in 2008?
Proc - AMD Phenom 8450 (3 cores, 2.1 GHz)
RAM - DDR2, 2 GB
Hard disk - 250 GB (HDD)
There is no video card here at all, apparently just an old Ati Radeon 2100 video chip
And what bit depth should I choose for the operating system?
Windows XP is not offered.

Seven will work great.
For Word and Excel it's great.
Do not run the main browser with so much RAM.

Each processor has its own:
Intel celeron 1000M - better than windows 8-8.1
Intel pentium 4 - AntiX
Intel 80486 - tiny core linux
Question?
Why I don't recommend windows 7
Answer?
Annoying notifications will come!
But I will advise the same hubuntu. A bare system at startup will take up ~650 mb of RAM and less than 8 GB of hard disk space. Another thing is what is meant by "work". In general, "sex" with linux is provided if you try to work in it like Windows, with the same software.
Approximately on such configuration in the same 2008 used mandriva linux 2008 (32bit). The disk from the Linux center, somewhere else lies in excellent condition. And nothing slowed down, I played counter 1.6 under wine, and several native Linux games, plus cs1.6 server worked on the same computer. But still, browsers and sites are now very stout, and more memory is needed, and the percentage is faster ...
PS From Linux, you can install any modern one, only 32bit and a simpler shell to choose - yes, at least put a few at once and try to work in them one by one, and choose what is optimal in terms of performance and capabilities.
I suggest 3 options...
1. Install Windows 2000 (however, Professional SP4 will cover only 120GB HDD)
2. Install Windows 2000 Datacenter Server (even supports 32GB of RAM)
3. Install Windows 2003 Datacenter Server (similar to XP, only many times better)
A Windows 7 is not the best option (it eats a lot, there is little profit), although it would fit better, due to the fact that now sites are sharpened for new browsers, and the software is new, and on Windows 2000 there is support for browsers only up to version 12 . So it's best to use Windows 2003, new browsers are still supported under it.
I have the last one spinning on the same computer. And the seven home, and on it about the palemoon browser, nothing works like that, it doesn’t really slow down. It is true, English-speaking, but do not care?
