If a beginner, look for the one with which you will be easier to handle, i.e. the one on which you can find a bunch of material on the net. I would choose between Ubuntu and Centos, but I would lean towards centos if you plan to go to the enterprise sector later. If it's just for yourself a couple of projects, then take ubuntu.
What operating system do you mostly use on your home computer? If it's CentOS, or Debian, or Ubuntu, or some other Linux or something else from Unix-like - that's what you put on the VPS. Of course, if you know how to handle Bash (and, in particular, you can configure iptables+ip6tables or UFW).
If you mainly use the Microsoft operating system, then hire a professional. VPS is a service for professionals, not for Windows users. You don't want your VPS to be easy prey for network intruders, do you?
I propose to take the most popular. Cloud Linux statistics from 1cloud.
