What methods of licensing web projects exist?

Good afternoon, colleagues.

Not so long ago I wondered - how is the mechanism for licensing web projects implemented? By licensing, I mean the activation of a license key for the further use of a web product. How, for example, is this mechanism implemented in commercial CMS like 1C-Bitrix?
In the far, near future, I plan to develop a project in PHP / Ruby with a team of like-minded people with the possibility of deploying it on a client server, or on a local network (including an intranet without access to the Internet).
Tell me, who implemented such things, or understands the mechanism itself, how it all works? Or give a link to good resources with a description of this functionality (even in English).
Thank you in advance!

Actual ways:
1. SaaS. You do not provide an archive with a project for the client, but host the source of the service at your own facilities.
2. Adequate support. Even if a client can download a nulled project, he will contact you anyway.

Don't sweat it. Serious people will not download from file dumps.
