What is this effect in Photoshop?

Tell me, please, what is it with me - why does the top layer shine through and the background becomes visible in gray?
How to disable?

Look at the blending mode of the Washer and Man layers.
It's on the right, in the Layers panel, at the top of the drop-down menu should be Normal.
