What is there now to replace WDS (Wifi) technology?

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is outdated, but until recently it was fine for home use. Now the load on Wi-fi at home has increased, plus I want to use the benefits of 802.11ac.
Is there anything to wirelessly connect two routers?
