What is the purpose of the b24_files directory?

Good afternoon everyone. The Bitrix CMS has a b24_files directory at the root. It has two subdirectories uf and iblock. In the iblock subdirectory there are subdirectories (4096 items) with the names 000 - fff. Each contains pictures with images of the goods (online store website). The main pictures are stored in the upload directory (455 Gb). The b24_files directory occupies 38 Gb.

What is the purpose of this directory?

This is a directory of all CRM/CMS files, there are scripts that help clean up "dead" files, but if it really takes up so much space, then something more radical is needed... refactoring the entire system, for example.
