What is the point of https?

Well, the protocol is encrypted. It’s clear, for example, to do a bank’s personal account on https, but recently a letter came from Yandex-XML that their service is also switching to https. What is the point of who will try to steal xml data for what? )) And information sites without registration, for example, why translate to https?

Because an attacker can spoof traffic along the way. And the information on this "information" site will become one that is beneficial to the attacker.

Encryption on public sites without registration is about the same as why you need cubicles in a public toilet.

Go to the subway, open http site, enjoy ads on the whole view-port.
Go to https site, enjoy the site.
For the average person, this is the first reason (however, in technical terms, it sounds like "the inability to replace the content with the provider or man-in-the-middle", which was mentioned above), much more understandable than "you will be corrected XML along the way ".

IHMO this is such a preparation for HTTP2. HTTP2 - encrypted by default

This is a trend. On the wave of hysteria about global surveillance, people began to prefer https versions of sites. If you don't catch the trend, you can lose visitors.
Everyone understands why encryption is good, and colleagues have already talked about this, noting specific benefits.
You only have to make a decision, but remember that the people have become obsessed with security. Issue price from $50 per year.
