But what's the problem with doing the same through a custom post type?

If you have a bit of experience editing WordPress templates and a basic knowledge of php, then you can do a lot with WP. As aarty20 already answered , this functionality is implemented through Custom Post Types.
To work with custom types, I recommend looking towards the PODS plugin , a fairly powerful solution. With this plugin, custom types can be created from the admin panel through the graphical interface, and displayed in the right place in your WordPress theme.
If you explain on the example of a biography. You need to create a new post type and taxonomy. The taxonomy will contain the categories, and the custom post will contain all the information about the person's biography.
What gives you a custom post type? You can create a menu item Biographies in the admin panel, where you can add new biographies of a person and display them in your template. When creating a biography for an individual, the standard post creation fields, such as Title, Post Body, Thumbnail, are not enough. You need additional fields in the admin area, such as years of life, additional photos, etc. Custom post types allow you to add additional fields. Thus, adding a biography will be as follows: Title of the entry - Name of the person, Text of the entry - biography, Thumbnails - photo of the person, years of life, additional photos. You can create as many additional fields as you like.
After that, you need to display all additional fields in your WordPress template.
You can read more about it in Russian here.
