What is the name of the product that is the next version of VMware Server 2.0?
Habr, hello.
We have a server, a lot of resources, idle. I decided to deploy a couple of virtual machines on it to test new versions of libraries, etc. At first I went along the path most familiar to me - I installed VMware Workstation. Everything is fine with it, but when it is running on the host to which I am connected via RDP (in windowed mode, not full screen), the player constantly loses focus. Accordingly, to make a double click, you need to do it without moving the mouse even a pixel :). Inconvenient, in general.
I looked at the product line - I saw a free VMware Server, installed it, everything is fine, only it broke the network (he is not talking about that now) and, as far as I understand, there is no support for Win7 / W2k8R2 in it. I read somewhere that the product is already legacy.
The next version seems to be vSphere. I would be happy to download it and install it, but I don’t know what product I need (and they have a lot of them and a small cart). Let me explain: VMware Server runs in the host OS, while vSphere ESX is a “bare metal” solution, i.e. acts as a hypervisor. A hypervisor is not required - it is the mode of operation in the host OS that is required.
Actually, the question is: what in the vSphere line is a virtualization server running on top of an already installed OS?

vSphere is a set of applications:
- ESX, ESXi is an OS that is installed on hosts (servers on which virtual machines will run)
- Center - a program for central management and distribution of virtual machines across
VMware hosts exists mainly in three configurations
Workstation - for Windows
Fusion - for other OS
vShpere - for server production virtualization
VMware Server 2 works perfectly fine on W2k8R2, and the network - check your settings, most likely they were wrong.
And it seems to me that the server would be best for you, it starts the virtual machine as a service.
it doesn't exist... I follow this application myself (and the last build was a long time ago 2009/10/26.
