All applications +- have the same speed. But - there are two mail protocols - POP3 and IMAP. I may be wrong, but in my opinion POP3 has a check timer, and IMAP checks mail all the time. Accordingly, try changing the protocol to IMAP.
The client of any popular mail service will work the fastest. Applications of popular services (for example, Mail.Ru) usually work with their server via HTTP with compression and use system push notification for new messages (some POP3/IMAP clients write that they support push, but this is not so, they support IMAP IDLE which requires persistent connection to the server).
