Unlike GNU/Linux, you can shit anywhere in FreeBSD, that's what it's meant for, to shit everywhere.

Suddenly /opt :) Well, or /usr/local - to taste. In general, in UNIX there is no concept of "can-not" (and actually in Windows too) - create a /popa directory in the root partition (and subdirectories bin, sbin, etc ...) and no one will interfere with installing programs there :)
For example, I now I adhere to the rule - everything that is not installed through emerge - put in /usr/local (as a rule, emerge does not put anything there)
