What is the disadvantage of hosting on github pages?
If I plan to use html + css + js, hosted on githubpages with my own domain, what pitfalls can I run into?

It depends on what to host and why.
If you are not going to make websites for "someone", for example, "unpretentious customers", who still need to change at least something there, then everything is ok.
If you use a static site generator, it will be difficult to deploy from a non-work computer, perhaps.
It may be difficult to deploy somewhere remotely due to the lack of a git.
If you often make changes, you should not forget to synchronize the web version with the local one (probably only relevant when using generators)
Well, and most importantly: I did not find the ability to upload files (for example, images) in the web version
As a result, for 90% tasks - no minuses, only pluses.
