What is the difference between CheckItem and ToggleItem in gtk.ItemFactory?

There are different item types in gtk.ItemFactory , notably CheckItem and ToggleItem .
On the surface, they behave the same way.
Actually, the question is: how do they differ and in what cases which one is preferable?
