What is the difference between asp.net MVC 5 and asp.net core?

I want to develop web applications, I know c#. No idea which framework to choose. As far as I understand asp.core is a continuation of the previous version, although in spite of this asp.net MVC 5 seems to be still relevant. As you understand, I am an inexperienced oiler, and therefore explain in more detail. And yes, if you can, tell me where to get info on asp.net MVC 5 or asp.net core. Thanks in advance)

Fundamentally not true. asp.net core is a new cross-platform runtime running under win/lin/mac. asp.net MVC 5 legacy.
