What is the difference between a dedicated server and hosting for game servers?

Tell me, please, what is the difference between vds and game hosting? and which is better. I wondered where to put the minecraft server, but I can’t understand what would be better, a dedicated server or my own computer for a server or “game hosting” where you need to pay for slots. which is more profitable?

Different providers understand "game hosting" as completely different services.
Judging by the context, "hosting for game servers" your supplier calls a ready-made game server with the sale of slots. We will proceed from this.
+ Virtually no financial investment (only Internet and computer repair)
+ A lot of existing RAM
+ Full control over the server and its environment (including hardware)
- Self-administration
- You need it yourself make backups
- Instability to network attacks (and Minecraft is especially vulnerable to them due to UDP)
- Risk of poor connectivity with some players (but sometimes the provider is lucky)
- You need a direct IP
- Spontaneous shutdown of the server during a power outage (if there is no uninterruptible power supply), corrupting or rolling back files of the game world
Suitable for playing with a closed company of friends (up to 5-15 people).
Not suitable for placement > 15 people (conditionally) and popularization in the network, tk. the risk of failing to cope with a network attack and more likely to be offline or lose data (responsibility to the players).
+ No hemorrhoids with environment administration and hardware repair
+ No hemorrhoids with setting up the server of the game itself
+ Backups are done for you
+ The game server is maintained for you (updating minecraft.jar, plugins to the server, etc.), and they do it good, because specialize in this
+ At least some kind of DDoS protection, because from the attack of one, all clients suffer, in which the hoster is not interested
- Monthly rental of the service
- Lack of full access to the server
- Risk of falling for unprofessional dropouts (because this is a niche filled with "school" entrepreneurs) and the risks arising from this
- Risk the appearance of lags from neighbor overload (for example: they were hit by DDoS)
- Dependence on the assortment and versions of minecraft.jar and plugins that the hoster chooses
- Expensive expansion of the number of slots
Suitable for a novice public server up to 20 people.
It becomes unprofitable to accommodate a large number of people as the server grows.
Minecraft.

It really depends on your desires and your mood.
If for yourself and friends - you can limit yourself to a computer at home.
If for a small audience - you can consider the option of VPS / VDS (virtual dedicated server), on KVM virtualization.
Because unlike OVZ, server resources are allocated more isolated. You don't depend on "neighbors" as much as on OVZ.
Some providers have the ability to enable/disable a DDoS protected channel when needed.
If you plan to professionally approach this issue - a dedicated physical north.
Intel Xeon based configurations. Preferably at least 4-8 CPU cores, 8-16 GB RAM, drives optional. In many ways, it all depends on the requirements of the game to the server and the complexity of the project as a whole.
