What is the correct way to use Sphinx in PHP?

Trying to figure out how to properly use Sphinx in PHP.
Do I understand correctly that the php api of the sphinx returns only record IDs (not counting snippets and additional attributes) and should I insert these IDs into my regular SQL query in IN?
If not, please tell me how. Thank you.
