What is the correct way to handle Amazon Simple Queries oversize errors?

I started working with Amazon Simple Queries and started running into size errors all the time. Either the total size of the message is greater than the limit, then one of the parameters is greater than the limit, then the size of the request is exceeded when sending a batch of messages, and so on.

Is there an article or some practice somewhere on how to properly handle such cases?

Ps I use the standard Amazon lib for php.
