In all projects, fonts are always stored on their server. But a matter of taste. I just don't like unnecessary connections, which are already full when using all sorts of counters and stats...
If the server is correctly configured for caching and other features, fonts at hand are not bad.

Almost always on combat sites, the first option is used. And it happens not only GF, but also other CDNs.
During site development or in an isolated environment (and there are such), choose the second option.

Personally, I prefer to connect via CDN from Google Fonts. Convenient, does not take up space on servers.
