What is the best way to organize the directory structure in terms of SEO?

/catalog/category/subcategory/product
- /catalog/category/subcategory
- /catalog/products/product

The first option seems more logical, but nesting and URLs are longer.
Perhaps there are other options. I would like to see examples in the comments
