What is the best way to embed icons in html?

I wondered which icons are better to use and how?
svg, png, font or generally css icons are the best?
if it is svg is it inline or maybe through object?
So that it is cached, and a minimum of requests to the server, and so that the image does not blur.
It is clear that eating a fish and ... ahem ... will not work, but still what is the most preferable way?
