What is the best/suitable way to archive media content?

Good afternoon. Please tell me the best / suitable method for archiving media content for my situation. There is Mac Os (Linux is also possible), there are a lot of video and sound files (mxf with mpeg2, mov in Prores, Wav) that need to be gradually archived to save space. The speed of archiving is not particularly important, the main thing is the degree of compression. Also interested in adding new files to the archive (or deleting files) without unpacking and re-compressing. Thank you. PS The mac has Homebrew installed, so you can offer utilities for Linux.

1. Can it be better to put a NAS?
Drives are now not expensive to do archiving.
2. Media should not be archived, but encoded if you do not need the originals.
